For a decade, Speak Up published a print magazine that gave voice to many dozens of writers facing homelessness. Here’s a great pre-Covid news story that captures the heart of the mission.
Over the years we’ve added new layers: a digital version of the magazine, new avenues for voiceless writers, community-building writing groups, and so much more.
Through all of this, we’ve held on to the print magazine archive of hundreds of essays and articles and stories. But at times it has almost felt criminal that the general public didn’t have easier access to read this work—which can surprise, educate, and inspire.
That changes today.
With this email we’re adding a brand-new website for Speak Up Magazine, completely focused on bringing those print issues, stories, and writers to a much bigger audience. It also provides a new, better platform for current writers facing homelessness.
At the dedicated Speak Up Magazine site, you’ll find
- An archive of printed magazines, many of them browsable in their original format.
- Hundreds of essays and stories from street writers facing homelessness.
- A sharpened pipeline for gathering and publishing work from today’s voiceless writers.
This is both a historical archive and a living site. We’re adding new work every month. Please feel free to share it with anyone you know who is currently facing homelessness.
